After years working in the offshore oil and gas industry with long swings and time away from home, starting a family inspired Paul Belczowski's decision  to become his own boss.

Seeing a big gap in the car detailing industry, Paul saw an opportunity to open his own boutique studio specialising in high end automotives. Diamond Detailing was born from his lifelong passion for cars.

Based in Wangara, Diamond Detailing offers paint protection, ceramic coating and other services for high end vehicles. Their products are hand selected specifically to keep cars in top notch condition in the harsh Western Australian climate.

In the 15 years since he made the leap to small business ownership, Paul has transformed how Perth’s car owners protect and preserve their quality vehicles.

The SBDC drives success

“When I first launched, it made sense to start out as a sole trader as an easier way to get the business up and running with minimal costs and paperwork,” Paul explained.

“As a one person operation in the early days, this structure gave me the flexibility to build my client base and focus on quality.”

As his client base grew, Paul decided it was time to transition his business structure from a sole trader to a proprietary limited company. He knew he could turn to the SBDC for help.

With free guidance from an SBDC business adviser and the assistance of a new accountant, Paul was able to successfully transition to a private company and update his accounting and banking processes to adhere to his new tax and legal requirements.

“When I contacted the SBDC I was able to be put straight through to a person who was helpful and compassionate and understood exactly what I was talking about,” Paul said.

The diamond is in the details

Running a small business is no easy ride, but for Paul, it allows him to manage his own schedule and commit time to both family life and his business.

“I’m in full control of my destiny really,” Paul laughed.

“Everything I do, I am doing for myself and my family which I am extremely proud of.”

After 15 years as a small business owner, Paul can’t picture his life any other way, and he looks forward to the continued success of his business, with support from the SBDC.
