Making sense of industry changes and trends can be overwhelming when you’re focused on the daily demands of running your business.

The SBDC can help simplify this process by providing free access to IBISWorld, offering reports with the latest data and developments.

Competitor activity, global market shifts and evolving consumer trends are always changing. Staying ahead of these changes can be difficult, but we’re here to help.

If you’re a small business owner in Western Australia, you can access IBISWorld market research and industry reports through the SBDC. Here’s your guide to why it’s worth your time and how to get started.

What is IBISWorld?

IBISWorld provides data and industry research on thousands of industries across the world. By examining a wide range of sources, IBISWorld provides the kind of information which can help you explore your customers’ changing needs, spot rising demand for certain products, find emerging trends and know potential risks in your industry. If you put this data to use, it could help you make more informed decisions for your business, without needing to invest your time and money in industry research yourself.

Data for every stage of your business journey

IBISWorld reporting can support you at every stage of your business journey. If you’re just starting out, industry reports can help you write a solid business plan by giving you insights into market trends, customer demand and potential challenges. For example, if you were thinking of opening a café, the H4511B Cafes and Coffee Shops in Australia report outlines key data such as average profit margins, industry forecasts, customer demographics and the competitive landscape, essential details that can strengthen your business case and planning.

As your business grows, these reports can help identify new opportunities and areas for expansion, whether that’s adding new menu items based on consumer trends, opening additional locations in growth suburbs, or adapting to changing economic conditions.

The key information you will find in IBISWorld reports could help you to create core components of your business plan. It’s also worth reviewing these reports on a regular basis to stay informed about trends and shifts in your industry.

How to access IBISWorld

To get started, use our Live Chat feature to let our team know you’d like to access IBISWorld.

Our team will ask you some quick questions about your business or proposed business and your location. Based on this information, we’ll then provide you with log in details for the IBISWorld website that will give you access for one week.

If you need more time at the end of the week, you can always come back to Live Chat and ask for a new login.

How to make the most of IBISWorld search

Use broader industry names and keywords for your search. A report might not appear in search results if you use a niche description for your products or services.

For example, instead of searching for “cronuts” for your new home based cronut making business, search for 'bakery' or 'cake'. This would lead you to report C1174 Bakery Product Manufacturing in Australia where cronuts would be part of 'Other Bakery Products' that make up 8.3 per cent of the market.

Within each report, you can usually find if the product or service you want to provide makes up part of that report in the 'Products and Markets' chapter of the report.
