As 2024 and the Small Business Development Corporation’s (SBDC) 40th anniversary year draws to a close, I am formally concluding my tenure as Small Business Commissioner of Western Australia and CEO of the SBDC.
After thirteen rewarding years leading this agency, I leave with the confidence that it is in excellent hands. The SBDC is supported by a strong leadership team and a dedicated group of staff who are unwavering in their commitment to helping small businesses across our state start well, survive, and thrive.
When I joined this agency 13 years ago as the inaugural WA Small Business Commissioner and CEO, I was immediately struck by the team’s problem-solving mindset, lateral thinking, and customer-focused approach. Despite the significant evolution of the agency during this time — nearly doubling in size — these qualities have remained steadfast.
Supporting small businesses requires effort, resilience, and a shared belief in our mission. It is not always easy, which is why having a strong culture of dedicated and resilient individuals who truly care about the small business sector is so vital to our success.
As I reflect on my time in this role, particularly through challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, I feel immense respect and admiration for the people we serve: WA’s remarkable small business owners, who embrace entrepreneurship with determination and passion. Equally, I hold great esteem for those who choose to serve the community as public servants or Members of Parliament.
Reaching another pinnacle in my professional journey, I am deeply aware of the many shoulders upon which I stand. These include not only the exceptional professionals I have had the privilege of working alongside but also the individuals in my personal life who have shaped and supported me.
Thank you to everyone I have worked with, including colleagues, stakeholders, and the Ministers I have served. A special thank you goes to my family for their unwavering support throughout my time in this role.
Looking ahead, I will be watching with pride as the SBDC continues to grow and achieve even greater successes in the future.
