Across the gardens of Perth’s south, nothing is impossible for grower and horticulturalist extraordinaire Jakki Kruger.
It may not be a coincidence that a growing number of Kwinana households and those further afield boast well-pruned front and back yards with seamless grass edges.
“My business is about garden maintenance and keeping things tidy. It involves lawnmowing, whipper-snipping, weeding and so on” Jakki explained.
Whilst they are the fundamentals of gardening, Jakki has bigger ideas as the owner of Serene Earth Sustainability, with a passion for living off the land.
“My vision is aimed towards helping people grow food, which can be setting up veggie patches, fruit trees and herb plants. Everything a customer can pick fresh from their garden to use in their kitchens and to live a more sustainable lifestyle” Jakki elaborated.
Fruitful first few months
Being a newly sprouted small business, Serene Earth Sustainability has seen steady growth and a lot of distance covered over autumn and winter.
“This is my first small business. I am very proud to be doing something that I’ve always loved so much, had a real genuine passion for, and that can help people” Jakki shared.
“I am trying to target the local area firstly, but I do go to Gooseberry Hill for a regular client with a lovely garden and I’ll go as far as Mandurah and Pinjarra southwards. I’ll travel a fair distance if it is worthwhile for me and if the garden is truly in need of that extra bit of love.”

Many local governments in Perth are part of the Small Business Friendly local governments initiative, including the City of Kwinana where Jakki is based.
“I heard of the SBDC through Kwinana council, because they’re really good with supporting local small businesses here.”
“The SBDC has so many services and tools to utilise, from forecast planners and calculators to development tools and marketing plans. I’ve got quite a list to get through. The resources are great and for the most part don’t even hit my budget.”
“On reflection, I wish I had found and used the SBDC earlier before I went into business, because there’s many things I should have checked through and known before launching.”

Planting the seeds of success
“I hope to be able to help more people grow their own fruit and veggies, as well as having a presentable and ornamental garden. To have both is achievable with the right care.” Jakki emphasised.
While the world becomes more aware of climate challenges, Jakki is holding up her end of the bargain, ensuring Western Australians can make the best use of the land on which they live – both for enjoyment and by putting fresher, tastier food straight from their gardens onto dinner plates.
