Chris Topfer has always loved comic books, movies, tv shows and pop culture. In 2014, he turned that pastime into a full time business.

Clarkson based Collector Zone! has grown over a decade into a hub for collectors, families and fans of all ages.

Specialising in rare comics, vintage collectibles and pop culture merchandise, the store quickly developed a loyal customer base through its community feel, curated collections and Chris’ deep industry knowledge.

Evolving a business

Chris dipped his toes into the small business world selling his toys and comics at local weekend fairs. With an eye for quality and a genuine connection with fellow collectors, he quickly gained a following, which evolved into establishing the Collector Zone Toy and Hobby Fair held every three months in Perth.

One year after launching the successful fair, Chris completed a small business management course. From there, he was introduced to the Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC).

Armed with new business know how and support from the SBDC, Chris took a leap of faith and started his retail store.

Now 11 years later, he has five employees and continues to run his popular toy and hobby fair.

Creating a competitive advantage

Chris attributes his success to stocking items that you won't find in shopping centres and offering a place where collectors are welcome, understood and get to see and touch items in person.

He says the best part of running the small business is the people.

“We have some of the best customers in the world,” Chris said.

He points out the reward he enjoys from engaging with his customers in store -

“The smiles on their faces when they leave happy with the purchases they've made because we've got those special collector items they are looking for.”

Business growth with the SBDC

Chris says running a small business is not without challenges, especially navigating the ever changing business landscape, in particular continual updates to rules and regulations in areas such as leases and wages.

“This is where I find the SBDC advisory service very helpful.”

“Whenever there's a new rule as a business owner, you need to be super aware of your rights and responsibilities and there is a mountain of information,” he said.

“The SBDC is fantastic. They just cut through all the information and help me find out what applies to me and my business.”

Being a time poor small business owner with a number of employees, Chris says he often finds himself confused by the mountain of information on any given business subject.

“Understanding what applies to my business is where I need help and clarification, and the SBDC helps me get to the information I need.”

“I have called many times, and if they can't talk or help straight away, I usually get a prompt call back from an expert in that area.”

Future focus

Looking forward, Chris says he is committed to continuing to grow the retail business, including customer awareness, but is also looking to grow his online store into a larger part of the business to continue to expand his reach beyond the local area.

Chris’ story is a great example of how a small business with the right support can spark innovation, build local identity, and contribute to the broader economy.
