A goal of embracing new digital cinematography techniques and platforms, but still delivering the same incredible care in every production was the motivation behind Jonathon Shaw launching his own cinematography business 12 years ago.

Limitless Studios located in West Perth now employs a team of five producing everything from television commercials to brand content and company promotional videos to general photography.

Jonathon said that he always enjoyed creating things for people to watch, be it films or short entertaining videos.

“In 2011 after working for several video production companies, I made the leap of faith and started my own business,” he said.

“It was a perfect outlet for my creative aspirations, and I genuinely enjoyed crafting stories for other businesses.”

Move with the times

Jonathon also said that is has been crucial to keep up with the ever-evolving digital platforms to meet the customer’s needs.

“Our focus and passion for cinematography, lighting and composition is as strong as ever, but we have combined it with new digital mediums at the bleeding edge of communication and immersive experiences to deliver appealing content.”

“When I was starting out in business, social media was just becoming something that was being taken seriously in the marketing realm.

“I could see the growing the demand for video and the market had enormous potential for growth as digital platforms like Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn emerged.

Look for non-monetary rewards in your business

Jonathon said that working with people, both clients and colleagues has been a most rewarding aspect of being in business for himself.

“Seeing people be delighted by a product you have created is very rewarding.” he said.

“Also watching the career progression of staff you’ve hired, trained and developed is another major source of satisfaction.”

Income does not always mean profit

Jonathon has learned a valuable lesson along his business journey regarding cash flow.

“Profit can be a bit of a theory,” he said.

“The money you make on paper does not necessary translate to cash in the bank.

“Apart from cash flow lessons, I have also learned and grown a lot in relation to managing staff and realising what is important to career progression for an employee.

Don’t rush the recruitment process

The advice Jonathon would give a younger version of himself, and to other fledging businesses, is that the people you work with shape the business and the people you spend your days around will shape your experiences.

“Hire the right people, and then build them up so that they will carry the business forward on their own,” he said.

Also, Jonathon advises demonstrating a business’s passion and connection with clients through social media.

“We have found putting some of your personality and featuring your staff and culture on your socials can be a powerful way to build trust and connect with your potential clients.”

SBDC website information can provide peace of mind

Jonathon says that he has often referred to the SBDC website particularly for help in HR, recruitment, tax and reporting obligations.

“I’ve always found it to be a trusted local source of information, where you know the advice and guidance is locally tailored, accurate and up to date,” he said.

“The site has always given me the peace of mind that the information I am following is applicable to Australian businesses.

“It is often hard to find good local information.”

Streamlining the future

Jonathon said that Limitless Studio’s future involves building the most efficient, streamlined production environment in the world and a place where creatives alike can work, build careers, and achieve their creative ambitions.
